Movie Review: Grown Ups

By Saurin Parikh

Thirty years after they win their school’s first ever basketball championship, five friends get together once again at the funeral of their erstwhile coach. They’ve been in touch through the years, but not really been close. Their coach’s funeral gives them the chance to relive the old days once again over a weekend spent at a rented lake house. Only this time, they’re not alone, they have their families with them. And with their partners and kids around, things are never going to be the same as they were in the good old days. The five friends have now grown up; they have responsibilities, ambiguities and problems. As they spend the weekend together, they rediscover their friendship, their love for their partners and the pleasures of a simple family life.

Grown Ups is directed by Dennis Dugan and boasts of an ensemble cast of some of Hollywood’s finest funnymen in Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider. The film also stars Salma Hayek, who doesn’t really fit in. The other guys are great at what they’re supposed to do: make you laugh.

The movie is a light comedy; it’s not the usual boisterous laugh-riot that we associate Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider with. Nonetheless, it still has its moments and sequences that make you laugh. That apart, Grown Ups is consistently pleasant and leaves you with a smile on your face. It might not be great cinema, but it has the feel-good factor of a nice story that cannot go wrong.

Grown Ups is about friendship, it’s about growing up, it’s even a coming-of-age story. It has various elements strewn into the story that make it a quality family movie. Overall, a decent, enjoyable watch.

Rating: 3 stars out of 5.
