Restaurant Review: Chandni Chowk

After the clearly hard-to-manage Pratap Da Dhaba and the boringly one-dimensional Wild Dining, this fellow called Pratap has come up with another theme restaurant, and a likeable one this time. Chandni Chowk at Mega Mall (Oshiwara) aims to make you feel as if you’re in Chandni Chowk, Delhi.

And Chandni Chowk goes all-out to recreate the vibe: food stalls in a row on one side, painted shops (and a real man selling real bangles) on the other, mannequins of people (in Delhi, of course), a road divider, a police chowky, a tree spreading its branches and leaves above you… it’s all there.

Sip on pudina shikanji (a spicy coriander drink) as you wait for your chhole bhature or rajma chawal. The food at Chandni Chowk is supposed to be authentic Delhi street food, but since I’ve eaten street food in Delhi only once, I’ll take their word for it. Those in the mood for even more hardcore Punjabi cuisine should go for the sarson ka saag and makke ki roti, and non-vegetarians can see if they like the mock meats available. And then there’s the chaat and pav bhaji. The food is not bad at all, but what Chandni Chowk scores on is the ambience. The setting is so good that you just want to sit there for a long time.
