Review: Namaste Guest House (Om Beach, Gokarna)

Your first option to stay at presents itself even before you climb down the rocks to Om Beach, and sure enough, it is there when your feet first touch the sand. Namaste Guest House is probably the only place that won’t tell you all their rooms have been taken; it’s the only place on Om Beach that doesn’t seem to mind Indians. The cottage we’re given (No. 213 – yes, my fellow Slayer fans) looks welcoming from the outside, but it is a dusty room with an unwashed mosquito net hanging loosely above the bed. The bathroom has ordinary green frogs and a Poison-Arrow Frog and a flush that doesn’t work, so you have to let the bucket fill with water and pour it down the commode unless you prefer to have your shit floating about. There is no hot water and the wash basin is outside the bathroom. Lizards and cobwebs are on the ceiling, and the big mosquitoes in the cottage cannot be stopped by the mosquito net; the electricity comes and goes during the night, and without room service of any kind – forget a phone, there isn’t even a jug of water here – all you can do is slap mosquitoes in the dark and pray for daylight. A day’s stay at this cottage at Namaste Guest House cost us Rs. 800, but it’s not worth even Rs. 200. You’d be better off paying more and staying at a cleaner and safer room at Namaste Guest House, or going to Kudle Beach, where accommodation is more reasonably priced.
