Food Review: Café Namgyal (McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala)

Despite having to walk back from the temple to where this vegetarian restaurant now is, Café Namgyal was a delight in every way. Its new location works better for me, because I really wouldn’t have wanted to hear any religious crap while eating. Not even Buddhist chants – sorry. Café Namgyal is now a part of Hotel Om, a guesthouse at the town square in McLeod Ganj, and can they serve a great pizza or what. Never in my life did I expect to like any food that had walnuts in it, but Café Namgyal‘s Roquefort cheese pizza, which had tomatoes and walnuts as toppings, managed to kick my ass just right. That was one of the most perfect pizzas I’ve had, and it would’ve tasted as fabulous even if the breeze wasn’t blowing in my face. As I sat there facing the valley, I tried a vegan dish to see if the other stuff there was as good, and damn right it was. The juice – as I’ve said in my review of Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen – was fantastic. I had two glasses of the mango juice because it was made of langda (‘langdo’ in Gujarati), a variety which hadn’t gotten the respect it deserved until that afternoon in Dharamshala. If you’re done looking at valleys and mountains or can’t handle the sun, you can sit downstairs unless you don’t like what you see in the slideshow.
