Best Music of 2012

sneha-khanwalkarReady as I was to bestow upon myself this honour, I have to admit there was a musical mind greater than mine at work last year, and it changed the way Bollywood music is listened to. Even though a couple of ditties on it miss the cut, the soundtracks of Gangs Of Wasseypur 1 and 2 can overwhelm you with its madness, and so much that I’m placing it higher than my flawless record of 2012 (Want proof? Download the pudding: pudding). Sneha Khanwalkar made some excellent music even before GoW 1 & 2, but with what was meant to be Anurag Kashyap’s magnum opus, she delivered music that can blow the most cynical of us away at some point. It’d take an extremely long post to review the music of both the movies, so I’ll leave you with this: on the soundtracks of “Gangs Of Wasseypur”, Sneha Khanwalkar has composed music that can make cripples get up and dance and can intimidate unchained beasts, and she has worked with the most unlikely of people to create this masterwork which I listen to everyday. It’s urban and rustic, it’s fun and catchy, it’s dark and foreboding, it’s weakening and empowering, it’s brooding and belligerent, and I’m saying all this in tremendous awe, so download the music and treat your ears to some of the best compositions from 2012.

GOW’s theme music sounds a lot like Dead Skin Mask.
